Spotted
The Thick-billed Saltator is a robust and distinctive songbird native to southeastern South America. It is characterized by its unusually heavy, thick bill, olive-green upperparts, and grayish head, adapting it for crushing large seeds.
Where to spot
Found in southeastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina. Inhabits humid Atlantic Forest, often in areas with mature trees or secondary growth.
How to spot
Look for its overall large size and, most importantly, its remarkably thick, heavy bill. Listen for its loud, clear, ringing song, often a series of pure, whistled notes. It can be found foraging in the mid-story or upper canopy.
When to spot
Active year-round. Most vocal during the breeding season (typically September to February) and during early morning.
