Spotted
The Red-pileated Finch is an attractive species, named for the male's bright red cap (pileum), contrasting with a dusky body. It prefers dry scrub and woodland edges.
Where to spot
Dry scrublands, woodlands, and forest edges in central and eastern South America, including Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Argentina, generally below 1,500 meters.
How to spot
Look for the male's distinctive red cap. It forages mostly on the ground or in low, dense vegetation. Listen for its soft calls, which can help in locating this often-secretive bird.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed in the mornings when it is most active and vocal.

The male's brilliant red cap is a key identification feature, especially visible when the bird is perched in good light, making it quite distinct from other finches.
