The Masked Mountain Tanager is a distinctive species with a black mask across its eyes and a blue body. It inhabits high-altitude cloud forests.
Where to spot
Endemic to humid montane forests and cloud forests, primarily at high elevations in the Andes of Colombia and Ecuador.
How to spot
Look for it in the mid-story and canopy of cloud forests. The black mask and blue body are key identification features.
When to spot
Active year-round. Best observed in the early morning when foraging for fruit and insects.
Its scientific name 'wetmorei' honors ornithologist Alexander Wetmore, who made significant contributions to the study of Neotropical birds.
