Spotted
The Long-billed Plover is a species of plover found in East Asia, characterized by its relatively long bill for a plover. It prefers rocky and gravelly riverbeds.
Where to spot
Found along the stony and gravelly riverbeds, large streams, and lakeshores across East Asia, including parts of China, Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia.
How to spot
Scan riverbanks and gravel bars carefully. Its mottled plumage provides excellent camouflage against the stony backdrop. Its distinctive long bill is a key feature.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in its resident areas, while migratory populations are best seen during spring and autumn. Active during daylight hours.
This plover's longer bill is an adaptation that allows it to probe deeper into substrates, particularly among pebbles and gravel, in search of aquatic invertebrates.
