The Sunda Scops Owl is a common and widespread small owl found across the Sundaic region of Southeast Asia. It is highly adaptable, inhabiting various wooded and open habitats.
Where to spot
Sundaic region of Southeast Asia (Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, Bali, Borneo, and many smaller islands). Inhabits forests, woodlands, plantations, gardens, and urban areas.
How to spot
Listen for its very characteristic, often rapid, 'pok-pok-pok' or 'wook-wook-wook' call. Look for its small size, mottled brown plumage, and prominent ear tufts. Spotlighting in trees at night, especially near human habitation.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal, active from dusk to dawn.

This owl is often found in suburban areas and parks, making it one of the more easily observed scops owls, especially through its distinctive vocalizations at night.
