The Sumatran Leafbird is a striking green bird endemic to the island of Sumatra. Males display a black face patch bordered by blue, contrasting with their vibrant green body.
Where to spot
Endemic to the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. Found in lowland and montane evergreen forests, forest edges, and cultivated areas with trees.
How to spot
Look for its bright green plumage and the male's distinct black face and blue border. Listen for its calls from the mid to upper canopy. Patience is often needed as they blend well with foliage.
When to spot
Year-round. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon when foraging for nectar, fruits, and insects.
This species was formerly considered a subspecies of the Blue-winged Leafbird but has been recognized as a distinct species based on morphological and genetic differences.
