The Javan Leafbird is a beautiful green bird endemic to the islands of Java and Bali in Indonesia. Males are characterized by a vibrant black face patch bordered by blue, while females are entirely green.
Where to spot
Endemic to the islands of Java and Bali in Indonesia. Prefers primary and secondary rainforests, forest edges, and sometimes plantations, from lowlands to hills.
How to spot
Scan the mid to upper canopy of trees for flashes of green. Listen for its distinctive, often mimic-like calls. Males are easier to identify due to their face mask.
When to spot
Year-round. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon, when they forage for fruits, insects, and nectar.
This species has experienced significant population declines due to illegal pet trade, leading to conservation concerns for its wild populations.
