The Sumatran Bulbul is a robust, olive-brown bulbul, endemic to Sumatra. It is a common and active species in its island forest habitat.
Where to spot
Endemic to the island of Sumatra in Indonesia, inhabiting primary and secondary forests, forest edges, and dense scrub.
How to spot
Look for its overall olive-brown plumage. Listen for its varied calls, which often provide the best clue to its presence. It can be seen foraging actively in the mid-story and lower canopy.
When to spot
Observable year-round in its resident island habitat. Most active during daylight hours, especially in the morning.
This species was formerly considered part of the Sunda Bulbul complex, but recent taxonomic revisions have elevated it to a full species based on genetic and morphological differences.
