Spotted
The Stripe-backed Antbird is a unique and rather large antbird, notable for its heavily streaked plumage and its habit of foraging on or near the ground. It is often found in open woodlands.
Where to spot
Dry, open woodlands and scrubland habitats in central and northeastern Brazil, extending into parts of Paraguay and Bolivia.
How to spot
Search on the ground or in low vegetation in dry woodlands and caatinga. Look for its distinctive streaked plumage and listen for its loud, ringing calls, which can carry quite a distance.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active during the cooler parts of the day, like early mornings and late afternoons.
This species is known for its habit of 'shuffling' through leaf litter with its feet to expose hidden insects, a foraging technique distinct from many other antbirds, often accompanied by a rapid series of movements.
