The Steel-blue Whydah is a striking brood-parasitic finch found in East Africa. Breeding males are iridescent steel-blue with very long, flowing tail feathers.
Where to spot
Found in arid and semi-arid savannas and acacia woodlands of East Africa, including Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania.
How to spot
Look for breeding males displaying over open areas. Their iridescent steel-blue plumage and very long, narrow tail feathers are unmistakable. Often found near Purple Grenadiers.
When to spot
Year-round. Breeding males are most spectacular during the rainy season when they develop their full tail plumes.
