Spotted
The Village Indigobird is a widespread and common brood-parasitic finch found across sub-Saharan Africa. Breeding males are iridescent blue-black with a red bill, while females and non-breeding males are dull brown.
Where to spot
Widespread in savannas, grasslands, cultivated areas, and villages across sub-Saharan Africa. Highly adaptable to human settlements.
How to spot
Look for breeding males singing from prominent perches in villages or open areas. Their iridescent blue-black plumage and red bill are diagnostic. They are often found near Red-billed Firefinches.
When to spot
Year-round. Breeding males are most conspicuous during the rainy season when they develop their iridescent plumage and sing frequently.
This species is a brood parasite of the Red-billed Firefinch, and male indigobirds learn and mimic the host's specific song to attract females.
