The Sahel Paradise Whydah is a spectacular brood-parasitic finch found in the Sahel region of Africa. Breeding males have extremely long tail feathers, a golden nape, and black plumage.
Where to spot
Found in the Sahel zone of West and East Africa, from Senegal to Sudan and Ethiopia. Inhabits dry savannas and acacia woodlands.
How to spot
Look for breeding males displaying over open areas. Distinguish from similar whydahs by the golden nape and specific tail feather shape. Often seen near African Firefinches.
When to spot
Year-round. Breeding males are most visible during the rainy season when their tail plumes are fully developed.
