Spotted
The Broad-tailed Paradise Whydah is a magnificent brood-parasitic finch found in parts of Central and Southern Africa. Breeding males have extremely long, broad, and somewhat blunt-ended tail feathers.
Where to spot
Distributed in woodlands and savannas of Central and Southern Africa, including DR Congo, Zambia, and Angola.
How to spot
Look for breeding males performing their display flights over grassy areas within woodlands. The very broad, squared-off tail feathers distinguish it from other paradise whydahs.
When to spot
Year-round. Breeding males are most visible during the rainy season when their impressive tail plumes are developed.
