Spotted
A medium-sized, highly camouflaged grouse of the North American boreal forest. Males are distinctively patterned with black, white, and reddish patches, while females are mottled brown, expertly blending into their coniferous surroundings.
Where to spot
Coniferous and mixed coniferous-deciduous forests across Canada and the northern United States, extending into Alaska.
How to spot
Walk slowly and quietly through dense coniferous forests. Look for birds foraging on the ground or perched low in trees. Pay close attention to subtle movements. Their tameness allows for close observation once found.
When to spot
Year-round. Easiest to spot in winter when snow provides contrast or during the breeding season (spring) when males are more active.

Spruce Grouse are sometimes called "fool hens" because of their remarkable tameness; they often allow close approach, relying on their excellent camouflage rather than flight to avoid detection.
