Spotted
The Spotted Woodpecker is a small to medium-sized species, characterized by its distinctive spotted plumage on its underparts. It is a resident of various woodland and forest types.
Where to spot
Found in West Africa, including countries like Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, and Ghana. Inhabits lowland rainforests, gallery forests, and mature secondary forests.
How to spot
Look for its spotted underparts and overall dark plumage with a red nape (male). Listen for its soft, repetitive calls and light drumming, often in the lower to middle levels of the forest.
When to spot
Active throughout daylight hours, observable year-round in its resident range. It can be elusive in dense forest undergrowth.
Despite its relatively small size, this woodpecker has a strong bill and is capable of excavating its own nest cavities in relatively hard wood.
