Spotted
The Pearly Fantail is a distinctive fantail species found in Southeast Asia, named for the pearly-white spots on its wing-coverts. It is an active insectivore of lowland forests.
Where to spot
Found in Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, and Borneo, typically in lowland rainforests and mature secondary forests.
How to spot
Look for its grey plumage with the distinguishing pearly-white spots on its wing. Observe its constant tail-fanning and agile movements. Listen for its rather plain, scratchy calls.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, constantly moving in the understory and mid-story.
The Pearly Fantail often holds its tail cocked upwards, fanning it vigorously as it forages, a common behavior among fantails.
