Spotted
The San Cristobal Fantail is a distinctive member of its family, characterized by its relatively plain yet elegant plumage and the typical broad, fanned tail. It is an active insectivore, constantly flitting through the undergrowth in search of prey. This species is unique to its island home.
Where to spot
Endemic to the island of Makira (San Cristobal) in the Solomon Islands. It primarily inhabits tropical moist lowland forests.
How to spot
Search for it in the dense understory of the island's forests. Look for its active movements and tail-fanning, and listen for its calls to aid in detection. Patience and binoculars are recommended.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, often more visible during early mornings and late afternoons when foraging. It is a resident species, present year-round.
Like many island endemics, the San Cristobal Fantail has evolved in relative isolation, contributing to its unique characteristics.
