Spotted
A small, intricately spotted antpitta that inhabits the understory of humid lowland and foothill forests. Its cryptic plumage provides excellent camouflage.
Where to spot
Widespread in humid lowland and foothill forests across the Amazon Basin, from eastern Colombia and Venezuela south through eastern Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Amazonian Brazil.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic calls, which are often the first sign of its presence. It is a very shy bird; observe patiently near where calls are heard, focusing on movement on the forest floor.
When to spot
Most active and vocal during early morning and late afternoon. Can be found year-round in its extensive Amazonian habitat.

The complex spotting pattern on its underparts helps it blend seamlessly with the dappled light and leaf litter of the forest floor, making it a challenge to spot.
