Spotted
Sharpe's Starling is a relatively small and dark starling species found in the montane forests of East Africa. It possesses a subtle metallic sheen on its dark plumage.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Albertine Rift montane forests of East Africa, occurring in countries like Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and parts of DR Congo, typically at higher altitudes.
How to spot
Scan the canopy and mid-story of montane forests. Look for a small, dark starling. Identifying features are subtle, but its association with mixed flocks can be a clue.
When to spot
Most active during the cooler parts of the morning and late afternoon. Can be observed year-round within its high-altitude forest habitat.
These starlings are often found in mixed-species flocks with other forest birds, benefiting from the collective foraging efforts and increased vigilance against predators.
