Spotted
The Spot-winged Wood Quail (Odontophorus capueira) is a secretive ground bird endemic to the Atlantic Forest of southeastern South America. It is recognized by subtle, intricate spotting on its wings and prefers dense undergrowth.
Where to spot
Endemic to southeastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina, restricted to the highly fragmented Atlantic Forest biome.
How to spot
Listen intently for its distinctive territorial calls, which can be quite loud and resonant. Being patient and still in areas with dense forest undergrowth increases viewing chances, as they are very shy.
When to spot
Most vocal at dawn and dusk, when their calls can reveal their presence. Can be observed year-round within its habitat.

Despite its name, the 'spots' on its wings are more like intricate white or buff markings that provide excellent camouflage rather than distinct spots.
