The Tacarcuna Wood Quail (Odontophorus dialeucos) is a little-known and rare wood quail, endemic to a specific mountain range on the Panama-Colombia border. Its plumage is generally dark with subtle lighter markings, providing excellent camouflage.
Where to spot
Endemic to the cloud forests of Cerro Tacarcuna on the border of Panama and Colombia. Its range is highly restricted and difficult to access.
How to spot
Requires dedicated expeditions to its specific habitat. Listening for calls is crucial, as visual sightings are exceptionally rare. Patience and an understanding of its unique vocalizations are key.
When to spot
Observation is extremely challenging due to its rarity and restricted habitat. Best attempts are during early morning or late afternoon when other wood quails are typically active.
