Spotted
The Mountain Quail is the largest of the New World quails, known for its distinctive long head plume and its preference for montane habitats. It is a shy and elusive species.
Where to spot
This species inhabits mountainous regions along the Pacific coast of North America, from Washington State south through California and into Baja California, Mexico, preferring chaparral and conifer forests.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, clear, whistling calls, which can carry a long distance. Look for them foraging in small coveys along brushy slopes or forest edges. They are often very wary and will run or fly into cover quickly.
When to spot
Best observed at dawn and dusk when they are most active foraging and vocalizing. They are present year-round, though may move to lower elevations in winter.

Its unique, long, slender, straight head plume, which can be extended or retracted, is a key identifying feature and contributes to its elegant appearance.
