The Black-breasted Wood Quail (Odontophorus leucolaemus) is a distinctive wood quail with a dark, often blackish, breast and throat. It inhabits dense undergrowth of humid forests in Central and South America.
Where to spot
Found in southern Central America, from Costa Rica and Panama south to western Ecuador. Inhabits humid lowland and foothill forests.
How to spot
Listen for its low, resonant calls which carry well through the forest. It is typically a very shy species, so quiet observation from a stationary position in dense cover is recommended.
When to spot
Most active and vocal at dawn and dusk. Can be observed throughout the year within its tropical forest habitat.
