Spotted
The Spot-flanked Gallinule is a medium-sized water bird found in freshwater wetlands across South America. It is characterized by its dark plumage, yellow bill with a red frontal shield, and distinctive white spots on its flanks. This species is often seen foraging at the water's edge.
Where to spot
Widespread across South America, from Colombia and Venezuela south to Argentina and Chile, and also in Trinidad. Inhabits freshwater marshes, swamps, and reedy ponds.
How to spot
Look for its dark body, yellow bill with red shield, and crucially, the white spots on its flanks. It is often seen swimming or walking along the water's edge. Listen for its varied calls, including harsh 'kek' notes and a low 'purring' sound.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active during the day, often foraging in open water or at the edge of vegetation.
The white spots on its flanks are a key diagnostic feature, making it relatively easy to distinguish from other dark-plumaged gallinules in its range.
