The Spectacled Weaver is a distinctive weaver bird, easily recognized by its prominent yellow 'spectacles' or eye-ring, contrasting with its mostly olive-green plumage. It is a common species of diverse habitats.
Where to spot
Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, from Guinea to Kenya and south to South Africa. Inhabits forests, woodlands, savannas, cultivated areas, and gardens.
How to spot
Look for its olive-green plumage and prominent yellow eye-ring. They are often seen in pairs or small groups, foraging in trees or bushes. Listen for their varied, often high-pitched calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Breeding activity is most prominent during the rainy season, when males are brightly colored and active.
