The Sardinian Warbler is a striking medium-sized warbler with a distinctive appearance: males have a glossy black head, bright red eye-ring, and grey upperparts, while females are similar but with a greyish head. It has a vigorous, scratchy, yet musical song. This species is common in Mediterranean scrub.
Where to spot
Resident across Southern Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. It is a non-migratory species in most of its range. Favors Mediterranean scrub (maquis), garrigue, olive groves, and gardens with dense bushes.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive black head (male) or greyish head (female), prominent red eye-ring, and relatively long tail, often held cocked. Listen for its loud, rapid, and scratchy song, which often includes harsher notes mixed with musical phrases, frequently delivered from the top of a bush or small tree.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round within its range. Most active and vocal during the breeding season (February-July), when males sing prominently from exposed perches.
