Spotted
The Spectacled Tyrant is a distinctive flycatcher of southern South America, named for the prominent yellow 'spectacles' around its eyes. Males are glossy black with the yellow eye-rings, while females are browner.
Where to spot
Open grasslands, marshy areas, and wetlands, often near water, in southern South America (Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, southern Brazil).
How to spot
Look for the striking yellow eye-rings. They often perch on low reeds, fences, or wires in open, damp areas. Watch for their active foraging flights.
When to spot
Best observed during the austral summer (October-March) when they are present and breeding. Some populations migrate north for the austral winter.

The vibrant yellow 'spectacles' are actually bare skin around the eye, which becomes more intense during breeding season and plays a role in visual signaling.
