Where to spot
Found in the Albertine Rift montane forests of East Africa, including parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi. Inhabits moist montane forests.
How to spot
Look for its finely banded underparts and yellowish-olive upperparts. Males have a red nape. Listen for its distinctive series of high-pitched calls and soft drumming, often on mossy trees.

Active throughout daylight hours, observable year-round. Often more active in the mornings, particularly for foraging.
This woodpecker is known to join mixed-species foraging flocks, especially with other insectivorous birds, which can increase foraging efficiency and predator detection.
