Spotted
The South Island Robin, or Toutouwai, is a medium-sized, endemic New Zealand robin, very similar to its North Island counterpart but genetically distinct. It has dark grey plumage and a pale belly.
Where to spot
Endemic to the South Island and Stewart Island of New Zealand, found in native forests, especially in areas with intensive predator control or on predator-free islands.
How to spot
Search for a dark grey bird with a pale underside, often on the ground. They can be quite bold. Listen for its soft, clear, whistled calls, which are a key way to locate them in dense bush.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active throughout the day, often seen foraging on the forest floor or perching low. Most vocal during the breeding season.
Like its North Island relative, this robin is highly susceptible to introduced mammalian predators, making its presence a key indicator of healthy, predator-controlled forest ecosystems.
