The South Island Piopio, or New Zealand Thrush, was a melodious songbird endemic to New Zealand's South Island. Sadly, it is now extinct, likely due to predation by introduced mammals.
Where to spot
Historically found in forests across the South Island of New Zealand. No longer observable in the wild.
How to spot
This species can no longer be observed in the wild. Information is available from historical accounts and museum specimens.
When to spot
Extinct since the early 20th century, with the last confirmed sighting in 1902.
