Spotted
The Plain Martin is a widespread and common swallow found across large parts of Africa and Asia. It is a rather drab, unstreaked brown martin, often seen near water bodies.
Where to spot
Open country, grasslands, agricultural areas, and savannas, usually close to rivers, lakes, or coastal cliffs where it can nest in burrows. Found in Africa, Madagascar, and parts of Asia.
How to spot
Look for its uniform brownish plumage and lack of streaking on the underparts. Observe its typical low, erratic flight over water or open ground. Often seen in large flocks, especially outside the breeding season.
When to spot
Year-round in most of its range, though some populations undertake seasonal movements. Active throughout the day.

Despite its 'plain' appearance, this species is highly adaptable, thriving in a variety of open habitats as long as there are suitable banks for nesting, including human-modified landscapes.
