Spotted
A large hummingbird closely related to the Swallow-tailed Hummingbird, characterized by its mostly green plumage and a contrasting gray belly. It possesses a less deeply forked tail than its close relative.
Where to spot
Found in humid lowland and foothill forests, as well as forest edges and clearings in southeastern Brazil. Less common in urban areas than the Swallow-tailed.
How to spot
Distinguish from the Swallow-tailed Hummingbird by its less deeply forked tail and the more prominent gray coloration on its belly. Look for it foraging at higher levels in the forest canopy.
When to spot
Active year-round during daylight hours. Best observed in the mornings and late afternoons when foraging for nectar is most intense.

Despite its name, the gray on its belly can often appear dusky green depending on the light, providing subtle camouflage amidst its forest habitat.
