Spotted
The Wine-throated Hummingbird is a small, vibrant hummingbird native to Central America, often recognized by the male's iridescent gorget that shifts color dramatically with light.
Where to spot
Typically found in montane evergreen and pine-oak forests, cloud forests, forest edges, and clearings at mid-to-high elevations across Mexico and northern Central America (Guatemala, Honduras).
How to spot
Look for them actively visiting flowering plants in montane habitats. Listen for their high-pitched, buzzy calls. Their rapid, darting flight and small size require patience to spot.
When to spot
These hummingbirds are resident year-round within their range. Activity is generally highest during the early morning and late afternoon when foraging for nectar.
Males possess a brilliant, reddish-purple throat (gorget) that can appear dull or black depending on the angle of light, creating a fascinating visual effect.
