Spotted
Elliot's Hummingbird is a small, iridescent species sometimes considered a subspecies of the Wine-throated Hummingbird, inhabiting the cool highlands of Central America.
Where to spot
Found in cloud forests, humid pine-oak forests, and forest edges in highland regions ranging from southeastern Mexico through Guatemala to Nicaragua.
How to spot
Watch for them as they hover and feed at various flowering plants in dense highland vegetation. Their diminutive size and fast-paced movements make them a challenging but rewarding bird to observe.
When to spot
Present year-round in its specific highland habitats. They are most active during daylight hours, especially in the mornings, when feeding on nectar.
Like its close relatives, the male's gorget can transform its appearance from deep purple to fiery red or orange, depending on how light reflects off its feathers.
