A large and magnificent hummingbird, the Empress Brilliant lives up to its name with its impressive size and rich, iridescent plumage. It is one of the larger species within the Heliodoxa genus.
Where to spot
Humid montane forests and forest edges in the Andes of western Colombia and northwestern Ecuador.
How to spot
Look for its larger size compared to other hummingbirds. It often feeds at larger flowers or perches high in the canopy. Patience and a good pair of binoculars are recommended.
