Spotted
The Common Buttonquail is a widely distributed small, quail-like bird, characterized by its cryptic brown plumage that provides excellent camouflage in its grassland habitats. It lacks the hind toe of true quails.
Where to spot
Found across Africa, Southern Europe, and parts of Asia, inhabiting grasslands, open woodlands, and agricultural areas.
How to spot
Look for it scurrying through dense grass; it rarely flies far. The best way to detect its presence is often by listening for the deep, booming call of the female.
When to spot
Most active at dawn and dusk. Females are more vocal during the breeding season, which varies by region.

Despite its wide distribution, it is highly elusive, often remaining hidden in dense vegetation and flushing only when nearly stepped upon.
