Spotted
The Spotted Buttonquail is an endemic buttonquail of the Philippines, a small and shy ground-dwelling bird. Its plumage features distinctive spotting, providing excellent camouflage.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Philippines, found in grasslands, open woodlands, and cultivation areas across various islands.
How to spot
It is highly secretive and difficult to see. Listen for its distinctive, low hooting calls which betray its presence within dense cover.
When to spot
Best observed during the breeding season when females are more vocal, often early morning or late afternoon.
As with other buttonquails, the females are the more dominant sex, initiating courtship and leaving the males to undertake incubation and parental care.
