Spotted
The Little Buttonquail is a tiny, highly nomadic ground-dwelling bird found across much of Australia. Its streaky brown plumage allows it to blend seamlessly into grasslands and open woodlands.
Where to spot
Widespread across mainland Australia, found in grasslands, open woodlands, and spinifex plains.
How to spot
Highly elusive; often detected by flushing a bird at close range from dense grass. Listen for the female's distinctive, deep, mournful hooting call, often heard at night.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in suitable habitat, but movements are highly correlated with rainfall and breeding opportunities. Most active at dawn/dusk.
