Spotted
The Sirkeer Malkoha is a medium-sized, terrestrial cuckoo native to the Indian subcontinent. It is easily recognized by its distinctive bright red orbital skin around a prominent red eye, a stout, decurved yellow bill, and dull brown plumage.
Where to spot
Found across the Indian subcontinent, preferring dry scrub jungles, open woodlands, thorny bushes, and deciduous forests.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive bounding hops on the ground as it searches for insects and small reptiles. Listen for its unique low, guttural 'kuk' calls, often delivered in a series.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, often seen foraging on the ground or in low bushes. It is a resident bird, so can be observed year-round.

Unlike most other cuckoos, the Sirkeer Malkoha does not exhibit brood parasitism; it builds its own nest and raises its chicks.
