Spotted
The Scaled Ground-Cuckoo is an elusive and poorly known species of ground-cuckoo endemic to the Amazon basin. It is characterized by a distinctive scaly pattern on its head and neck, which gives it its common name.
Where to spot
Inhabits primary lowland humid rainforests in the western Amazon basin, primarily found in specific areas of Brazil, Ecuador, and Peru.
How to spot
Due to its extreme rarity and preference for undisturbed, dense forest, observing the Scaled Ground-Cuckoo requires immense patience and luck. The best strategy is to spend time in known primary forest habitats, ideally with local guides who are familiar with its signs or calls, often near army ant swarms.
When to spot
Year-round resident within its restricted range. Like other ground-cuckoos, it is likely most active during daylight hours, though encounters are rare.
The Scaled Ground-Cuckoo is considered one of the rarest and least studied members of its genus, making direct sightings exceptionally infrequent and a highly sought-after prize for dedicated birdwatchers.
