Spotted
The Lesser Coucal is a relatively small coucal species widely distributed across South and Southeast Asia. It is known for its adaptable nature and striking seasonal plumage changes, especially during breeding.
Where to spot
Found in a wide range of open and semi-open habitats, including grasslands, rice paddies, scrubland, and reeds, across South and Southeast Asia. It favours dense, low vegetation.
How to spot
During the non-breeding season, it resembles a smaller Greater Coucal with rufous wings and streaky underparts. In breeding season, look for its all-black appearance. Listen for its deep 'hoop-hoop' calls, which are similar but often higher pitched than the Greater Coucal.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours. Its distinctive breeding plumage is visible during the breeding season, which often correlates with the rainy season in its range when it is most vocal.
