Where to spot
Large, dense freshwater swamps and marshes, particularly papyrus swamps, in East Africa (Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia).
How to spot
Look for its immense size, grey plumage, and most notably, its massive, shoe-shaped bill. Requires a boat to access its remote habitat. Often remains perfectly still, blending into the papyrus.
When to spot
Year-round. Best observed quietly during the dry season when water levels are lower, concentrating fish and making the bird more visible.

The Shoebill is a highly specialized hunter of large fish (especially lungfish) and prefers to hunt by standing motionless for long periods in dense papyrus swamps, waiting for prey to surface.
