A unique medium-sized wading bird of Africa, Madagascar, and Arabia, the only member of its family. It is distinctive for its hammer-shaped head profile, formed by a crest and bill.
Where to spot
Wetlands, rivers, streams, and ponds, generally near water with trees, throughout sub-Saharan Africa, Madagascar, and coastal Arabia.
How to spot
Easily identified by its uniform brown plumage and unique hammer-shaped head. Often seen wading in shallow water or perched near water sources. Look for its distinctive large nest.
When to spot
Year-round. Most active during daylight hours.
The Hamerkop builds exceptionally large and elaborate nests, often several meters wide, consisting of sticks and mud, sometimes strong enough to support a person's weight.
