Spotted
The Scaled Metaltail is a relatively large metaltail with a unique, iridescent blue-green scaling on its breast and belly, in addition to its typical metallic tail. Its gorget is typically emerald green.
Where to spot
Found in the Andes of southern Peru and northern Bolivia, inhabiting humid montane forests, elfin forests, and shrubby paramo at high elevations. It adapts to various flowering habitats.
How to spot
Identify by the striking scaled pattern on its underparts and its bright green gorget. It often perches for extended periods, making observation of these features easier than with more restless hummingbirds.
When to spot
Active throughout the year, especially frequenting flowering plants during the day. Mornings are often the most active period for foraging.
The 'scaled' appearance comes from the overlapping iridescent feathers on its underside, which catch the light in a beautiful pattern, distinguishing it from other metaltails.
