The Northern Golden-bellied Starfrontlet is often considered a subspecies or distinct population related to the Golden-bellied Starfrontlet, sharing its characteristic golden-orange belly and iridescent green plumage. It occupies the northernmost parts of the species' range.
Where to spot
Primarily found in the humid montane forests of the eastern Andes in Colombia, and possibly extending into Venezuela. It generally occurs at elevations similar to the Golden-bellied Starfrontlet, around 2,200 to 3,200 meters (7,200 to 10,500 feet).
How to spot
Seek it out in areas with flowering plants in its specific high-altitude habitat. Focus on its glowing golden belly, which is the most distinctive feature. Patience is needed for close observation.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, with high activity especially in the morning and late afternoon. It is a resident bird and can be observed throughout the year.
The *Coeligena* genus is known for its remarkable ability to hover and maneuver in dense forest undergrowth, allowing them to access nectar from flowers that are difficult for other birds to reach.
