Spotted
The Northern Plovercrest is a captivating hummingbird, closely related to the Southern Plovercrest, known for its unique crest and iridescent plumage. It is often considered a distinct species within the plovercrest complex.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Atlantic Forest of eastern Brazil, particularly in the states of Espírito Santo and Bahia, often at slightly higher elevations than its southern counterpart.
How to spot
Focus on forest borders, clearings, and areas with abundant flowering plants, especially bromeliads. Listen for their high-pitched calls and watch for their rapid, darting flight as they move between nectar sources.
When to spot
Can be observed throughout the year in its native habitat. Early mornings and late afternoons are generally the best times to spot them visiting flowers.
