Savi's Warbler is a medium-sized, plain, and rather featureless warbler, making it challenging to identify visually. Its most distinctive characteristic is its loud, prolonged, reeling song, reminiscent of a grasshopper or a fishing reel. It is strongly associated with dense reedbeds and marshland habitats.
Where to spot
Breeds across parts of Western and Southern Europe, extending eastward through Central Asia. Winters in sub-Saharan Africa. Exclusively found in extensive reedbeds, sedge beds, and other dense emergent vegetation in wetlands.
How to spot
Listen intently for its distinctive, prolonged, insect-like reeling song – a continuous 'trrrrrrrrr' sound, often given from deep within the reeds. Spotting it requires extreme patience; look for movement high up in reeds or as it briefly flies across a small open patch. Its plain brown plumage provides excellent camouflage.
When to spot
The breeding season (April-July) is the best time, as males sing from concealed perches in reeds, especially during dawn and dusk. Migration periods (March-April and August-September) can also offer opportunities, though they remain elusive.

Savi's Warbler is a master of mimicry within its own species; individual birds often incorporate parts of other Savi's Warbler songs into their own, leading to a complex and varied reeling performance.
