Spotted
The Spinifex Grassbird is an endemic species to arid regions of Australia, specifically adapted to the harsh environment dominated by spinifex grasses. It is a skulking bird.
Where to spot
Endemic to arid and semi-arid regions of Australia, primarily found in spinifex grasslands, often on rocky hillsides or sand dunes.
How to spot
Requires dedicated search in spinifex habitats. Listen for its distinctive, often simple and repetitive song, and look for subtle movements low in the dense, spiny grass. It rarely perches conspicuously.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active and vocal during the breeding season (often after rains), in the early mornings and late afternoons.
This grassbird's cryptic plumage provides excellent camouflage among the spiny, arid-adapted spinifex grasses, making it incredibly difficult to spot.
