Where to spot
Typically found in open woodlands, forest edges, gardens, and sometimes mangroves across its South American range.
How to spot
Look for its striking throat patch, which is most visible in good light. It can be quite approachable at feeders or flowering plants, allowing for clear views.
When to spot
Active year-round, especially during the breeding season. Best observed during early morning and late afternoon when foraging is most intense.
Males often perch conspicuously on exposed branches, flashing their iridescent throats to attract females and fiercely defend their feeding territories.
