Inhabits arid scrubland, desert oases, cultivated areas, and open dry woodlands. Its distribution spans the Pacific coast and inter-Andean valleys from northern Peru to northern Chile.

Look for its distinctive, slightly decurved bill and the male's iridescent green body paired with a brilliant purple throat. They are frequently seen feeding at tall cacti or other desert-adapted flowering plants. Their rapid flight and hover feeding are typical.
