Spotted
The Oasis Hummingbird is a medium-sized hummingbird renowned for the male's striking iridescent green body and purple gorget. It is well-adapted to the arid coastal and Andean regions of western South America.
Where to spot
Inhabits arid scrubland, desert oases, cultivated areas, and open dry woodlands. Its distribution spans the Pacific coast and inter-Andean valleys from northern Peru to northern Chile.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive, slightly decurved bill and the male's iridescent green body paired with a brilliant purple throat. They are frequently seen feeding at tall cacti or other desert-adapted flowering plants. Their rapid flight and hover feeding are typical.
When to spot
Can be observed throughout the day, with heightened activity during early morning and late afternoon when they primarily visit flowers for nectar. It is a year-round resident species.
