Spotted
The Pale-billed Hornbill is a medium-sized hornbill found in the miombo woodlands of south-central Africa. It is distinguished by its dark brown plumage, white underparts, and a very large, pale yellow bill with a prominent casque.
Where to spot
Found in south-central Africa, including Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, and parts of Tanzania. Prefers miombo woodlands and other dry deciduous forests.
How to spot
Look for its dark upperparts and contrasting white underparts, combined with a strikingly large, pale yellow bill. Its loud, distinctive 'kow-kow-kow' calls are often heard echoing through the woodlands.
When to spot
Resident year-round in its habitat. Active during daylight hours, typically seen foraging in the tree canopy.
Pale-billed Hornbills have a specialized diet heavily reliant on fruits, particularly those of miombo trees, which they consume in large quantities, aiding in seed dispersal across the woodland ecosystem.
